June 29, 2005– Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen said Wednesday that there is no place for racial or ethnic slurs or divisions in our community. In response to recent complaints made by a St. John family that their property has been defaced with racial graffiti and that threats have been made, Christensen said that she has spoken to the family, the FBI and the Virgin Islands police.
"There is no place in our small and intimate community for that type of behavior," Christensen said. "St. John, in particular, is known as Love City, a tribute to the tranquility traditionally found between neighbors on that island. While law enforcement officials are addressing this issue, I hope that the larger St. John community that does not share these negative attitudes will make it clear that it will not be tolerated on that island and that it will be confronted and diffused wherever and whenever these tensions arise."
Christensen said that she is hopeful that the spirit of the carnival celebrations in full force on St. John this weekend will prevail.
