Community Alert: No Major Damage at GERS

July 18, 2005 – On Sunday evening, July 17, 2005, at approximately 8:35 p.m. while undergoing an electrical upgrade to the electrical system of the Government Employee Retirement System Complex, an explosion occurred in one of the transformers to the building resulting in a minor fire on the exterior of the building in the area of the transformer. A release from GERS said there was no other physical damage to the structure, the only damage that resulted was the damage to the transformer and certain Water and Power Authority lines leading to the transformer. The electrical contractor, Foy Electric, has directed power to the standby generation system of the building.
"We have been advised that the building will be served by the standby generator until such time that full electrical service is restored to the building," the release said.
Service to the public will commence at 8 a.m.Monday, the release said.
