Memorial Service Planned for Dick Johnson

July 18, 2005 — The sailing world and the Virgin Islands in particular, lost an excellent sailor and true sportsman last month with the passing of Richard (Dick) Johnson. Dick's contributions to Caribbean sailing and his quest to grow the respect for small countries the world over in the International Sailing community was his life work.
Dick served as an International Judge and worked on many committees in ISAF (International Sailing Federation) for over 30 years.
The U.S. Virgin Islands benefited greatly from the works of Dick enabling them to host the Maxi Yachts on three occasions and even convincing the IYRU (International Yacht Racing Union), now ISAF, to hold their mid-year meeting on St. Thomas. Dick was still racing his J-36 Blue Bayou and cruising his trawler, Yonder at the time of his death.
Sailors from Antigua to Beaufort, N.C. will long remember Dick for his blustery voice, gentle manner and sailing prowess. A service will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 at the St. Thomas Yacht Club. All are invited to celebrate his life with his St. Thomas family.
