Rutnik Scholarships Await Two Central High School Girls

July 27, 2005 – St. Croix Central High School's prowess at the ninth annual Ruby Rutnik softball tournament in April means that a Central High School girl is eligible to apply for a one-year $2,500 scholarship.
"They won the championship this year and last year," Ruby's mother, Janet Cook-Rutnik, said Wednesday.
She added that the 2004 scholarship remains available because it was not awarded. Therefore, there are actually two scholarships to be awarded to Central High School girls. They have until Aug. 16 to apply.
The annual tournament also awards other scholarships. One two-year $2,500 scholarship goes to a St. John girl. The scholarship is renewable for a second year. This year's recipient is Valerie Trahan, an Antilles School graduate. She plans to pursue a bachelor's degree at Florida Southern College, where she will major in athletic training and health fitness.
Last year Marilyn Callwood won the scholarship, which was renewed this year. In the first year of the scholarship, she studied hotel management at Johnson and Wales in Miami. In the fall, she will study accounting at Florida Metro College in Orlando.
A University of the Virgin Islands student from St. John receives a one-year $2,500 scholarship. This year, it went to Abiola Hodge, a third-year student studying biology.
Rutnik and her husband, Licensing and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Andy Rutnik, organized the tournament in memory of their daughter, Ruby. She died in 1996 at age 21 in a car crash in Washington, D.C. Her birthday is April 9, hence the April tournament date.
She was well known as a star pitcher at Antilles School.
Applicants for the St. Croix Central High School scholarship must be 2005 Central High School female graduates in good standing. The applicant or her family must be St. Croix residents for five or more years.
She must also demonstrate financial need and be accepted at an accredited college or university. Her completed and signed application form must include copies of college or university acceptance letters, a counselor’s evaluation form, record of extracurricular activities and employment, if any, a one-page essay related to career goals, and her official high school transcript and SAT scores.
The application must also include a copy of her parent or guardian's 2003 form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ income tax return and a copy of a license, passport or school identification photo.
The scholarship will be withdrawn if the scholarship recipient does not attend an accredited college or university full time or fails to maintain satisfactory grades for more than one marking period.
A copy of the recipient's transcript must be submitted to the fund administrator following each quarter.
A committee of at least five V.I. educators or civic leaders will be organized by the Ruby Rutnik Scholarship Fund Inc. to make the scholarship selection.
Applications are available at the Department of Education office located at 2133 Hospital Street, Christiansted. Contact Peian Dennis at 773-1095, extension 266.
Send applications to P.O. Box 348, St. John VI, 00831. For more information, contact Cook-Rutnik at 693-8069.
