July 30, 2005 – Growing up on St. Croix, C.G. Walwyn never thought he would become a police officer, but now he is, and has even been honored for his service to his community.
Walwyn, who works with the Domestic Violence Unit for the Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando, Fla., was recently awarded the Sheriff's Citation for exemplary community work. Walwyn received the award for his willingness to go beyond the call of duty in assisting those in his community. His generosity towards victims of domestic violence led to him being nominated for the award.
"You have to go back to the Golden Rule – 'Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you,'" Walwyn said. "That's what this is all about."
Walwyn said he reaches out to the abused women and children he encounters because he keeps thinking if anything were to happen to his own family, he would want someone to take care of them as well.
The 48-year-old and his wife, Antoinette, have four daughters: Tikisha, 19; Sindy Jo, 15; Tonishah, 14; and Tiseanna, 10.
Walwyn said he was visiting family on St. Croix when he was told that he had been nominated for the award. He said his trip was cut short for him to return to Florida, where he was officially awarded last Thursday.
Walwyn, who was born on St. Kitts, said he always thought he would be a doctor or medical technician, although his father was a police inspector on that island. Upon moving to St. Croix, he joined the V.I. Police Pre-Cadets – also known as the Law Enforcement Explorers – in 1973. Although he joined the Pre-Cadets to gain emergency medical technician training, Walwyn credits his achievements today to the early start he had with the organization.
"I didn't plan to be a policeman, but I ended up one," Walwyn said. "I guess it's in my blood."
