Community Alert: Power Outages May Last Several Hours

Aug. 16, 2005 – The V.I. Water and Power Authority announced that a 2:40 p.m. lightning surge caused power outages on St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island. According to a statement, the surge affected the Randolph E. Harley Power Plant on St. Thomas.
Glenn Rothgeb, chief operating officer, said after Unit 23 was taken down it was a cascading effect with Units 13, 15, and 18 all going down.
As of 6:30 p.m. Units 13 and 18 were back on line and many customers on St. John and St. Thomas had their power restored. Rothgeb said he was not sure when all service would be restored. He said "Unit 23 looks like a problem."
WAPA was also trying to bring Unit 11, a steam turbine on line.
