Aug. 18, 2005 – Gary Moses sailed south from Annapolis, Md., into a busy business career that now focuses on Mixology Warehouse, a liquor store located below Polli's Mexican Restaurant on the road that passes Boulon Center.
The store sells a nice selection of something for everyone. "It's the regular everyday stuff that most people drink," he said.
Taking a visitor on a tour, Moses pointed out the selection of wines that include bottles from the United States, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and the popular Australian wines.
A refrigerated case keeps whites and champagnes chilled for impromptu events.
The rum selection includes bottles of the prestigious Pyrat brand and huge bottles of the St. Croix-made Cruzan rum as well as smaller bottles of the flavored Cruzan rum. It comes in raspberry, mango, pineapple, orange, vanilla, and coconut.
"Mix it with club soda or fruit juice or serve it on the rocks," Moses suggested. He uses the vanilla Cruzan rum to make rum cake.
He said the flavored Stolichnaya vodkas – it comes in raspberry, peach and orange – are also popular. Moses said it's nice to mix them with club soda or tonic water.
"Or make a blender drink," he said.
Of course, the Mixology Warehouse sells numerous varieties of beer, including the ever-popular Heineken, scotch, gin and specialties like Godiva liqueur in flavors like white chocolate.
The coolers are also filled with soda and juices for quick refreshments, and if he doesn't have what you want, Moses said he'll do a special order.
Moses started the store because he thought prices had gotten too high on St. John, he said.
"We needed the competition," he said, speaking about his effort to keep prices down.
Moses, who would only give his age as "older than dirt," started his St. John life in 1990 with a job at Proper Yachts. He segued that into a post as Caneel Bay shipyard manager. From there, he opened Noah's Little Arks, a dinghy rental business he operated in Cruz Bay Harbor. A job managing the Banana Deck Restaurant followed.
Moses, who still lives aboard his boat, Dulcinea, anchored in Cruz Bay Harbor, got interested in boats because his grandfather had a boatyard on the Severn River outside Annapolis.
He went on to manage the 400-slip Liberty Yacht Club in Annapolis before taking off for his St. John adventure.
"I just got fed up," he said.
Mixology Warehouse is open during the summer from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. It stays open to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and the store is closed Wednesday.
In the winter, Mixology Warehouse is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
