Aug. 25, 2005 The Virgin Islands chalked up its 27th killing of the year Wednesday night when a St. Croix man was shot and killed. It is St. Croix's 14th homicide of the year. Police have no suspects in the case and have not established a motive. Territorial Police Chief Novelle Francis Jr. said reports of shots fired near No. 830 Williams Delight came in to police around 10:30 p.m. and when officers responded, they "found the lifeless body of a male individual with a gunshot wound to the head."
Francis identified the victim as 44-year-old Gabriel Albert.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that Albert was visiting a friend in the Frederiksted community when he was accosted by an unknown individual who opened fire on him.
"The case is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau," Francis said as he urged anyone with information to contact homicide detectives at 778-2211, ext. 6031; 778-4950 or the emergency number 911. Francis said the murder weapon was not recovered.
Albert's death is the 27th killing in the territory this year and the second in 36 hours.
Early Tuesday morning Francisco Stevens was shot and killed at the intersection of Kronprindsens Gade and Habbet's Gade on St. Thomas. In that case, police also have no motive, no suspects and have not recovered a murder weapon.
