Interns Learn Ropes of Advertising

Aug. 25, 2005 – Four St. Thomas students got a taste of what it's like to work in an advertising agency or related company through the Advertising Club of the Virgin Island's annual intern program. Students spent six weeks on the job.
"The program was to introduce students to the idea of having a career in advertising," said Cheryl Thompson, the outgoing Advertising Club treasurer who spearheaded the internship program.
The students include Anwar Rohan, 20, a junior at the University of Delaware who is studying business management and marketing. He worked as an intern at First Bank doing marketing tasks that included writing press releases and documenting the company's procedures.
Galena Armstrong, 19, is a junior at Regis University in Denver, Colo. She is pursuing a degree in business marketing. She worked as an intern for CET Business Services.
Marika Blondel, 22, graduated in May from the University of the Virgin Islands with a bachelor's degree in business marketing. She interned at the UVI's Reichhold Center as a marketing assistant and a ticket agent.
Robert E. Fontaine Jr., 24, graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in business from UVI. He is still working as an intern for MLB Creative's account services and writes copy and scripts for radio commercials.
Thompson said that Rohan and Blondel also helped with the Advertising Club's summer auction. She said the auction raised money to fund the intern program.
"It's a match between the club and the business," she said.
She said companies receive up to $800 to pay half of the students' salaries.
Thompson said the Advertising Club has sponsored internship programs for many years. "I've had an intern for years," she said.
