Aug. 29, 2005 — The yearlong effort, spearheaded by Senate President Lorraine Berry, to bring focus to the significance of Salt River as a historical site and possible tourist attraction continues with a meeting in Frederiksted on Sept. 1.
The National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve Task Force meets at 10 a.m. at the conference room in the Government Building at Lagoon Street. This is its first meeting since the May 26 Media Day at Salt River. (See " Camping Restriction Still an Issue at Salt River ").
According to a memorandum from Berry's office, the discussion will focus on the following items:
–Update on plans for the removal of abandoned and damaged boats in the ocean surrounding the area;
–Discussion about public relations;
–Status of DPNR legal description of additional 45-plus acres of government property in preparation for transfer from Housing Parks and Recreation to DPNR;
–Update on an alternate parking lot and erection of barrier/boulders at site; and
–Plans to meet with Homeowner’s Association and Salt River campers.
