Dec. 30, 2005 – The V.I. Waste Management Authority Friday was investigating the source of an unusual odor coming from the Bovoni Landfill.
Stella Saunders, WMA spokesperson said, "The smell is diminishing and has not affected any area outside of the landfill."
She added that samples of the saturated soil where the smell is coming from are being taken and will be sent to an off-island laboratory to determine exactly what substance is involved.
Contractors, working for the vehicle detoxification site at the landfill, reported the spill in the area adjacent to the Do-It-Yourself Used Oil Collection.
According to a press release from the WMA, "The area was cordoned off and first responders were contacted. Representatives from Fire Services, Planning and Natural Resources, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Environmental Health, police, and VITEMA responded and assisted in evaluating the situation."
The release also said that the Hazardous Materials Response Team has been activated. The used oil collection site at the Bovoni landfill will remain closed until further notice. Residents are asked to use the collection site located at the Department of Public Works' Motor Pool during this time and are reminded that they are allowed to dispose of a maximum of five gallons of used motor oil per month at the sites.
