EDC Company Donates $18,000 to Bolster Public Education

Jan. 3, 2006 – Two St. John groups received help recently from Golden Eagle Financial, an Economic Development Commission beneficiary company owned by Charles and Gale Cresap of St. John.
"The Cresaps are giving donations geared toward public education on St. John," Golden Eagle Administrative Assistant Je'Nelle Forbes said Tuesday.
The St. Thomas-based company gave $10,094 to the Friends of the Elaine I. Sprauve Library to pay for new books and DVDs and $8,000 to the Friends of V.I. National Park to fund the group's Parks as a Living Classroom program.
Librarian Carol McGuinness said that the donation funds the World Almanac Education program, which provides various books like Chilton's Auto Repair Guide and travel books.
She said the donation will enable the library to add children's DVDs as well as more adult videos to its existing collection. However, McGuinness said that parents must check out the DVDs for their children "so the parents will be responsible for what their child watches."
She said DVDs can be checked out for one week at no charge.
The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Friends of the Park President Joe Kessler said that $5,000 of the Golden Eagle donation will go to help teachers use the park as a living classroom.
"They have a living laboratory at their doorstep," he said.
The other $3,000 is earmarked to pay for transportation to the park for public school students on St. Thomas and St. John.
Kessler said teachers who want this assistance for their students should contact Interpretive Division Chief Paul Thomas at 776-6201.
