Brief: Fire Destroys 8 Rooms at Resort

Jan. 16, 2006 — An early Monday morning fire destroyed eight rooms in a hotel overlooking Magens Bay.
Hotel guests fled the two-story, 16-room eastern wing of the Magens Point Resort as flames engulfed the roof, Fire Chief Glenn Francis said Monday morning. No one was hurt.
Eight other rooms suffered water and smoke damage, Francis said.
The fire likely started in the ceiling crawlspace and was reported to fire fighters at 4:30 a.m., he said.
Heavy overnight rain helped fire fighters extinguish the blaze by 7 a.m., Francis said.
"I can confirm it wasn't something that started in any of the rooms," he said, adding that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
Officials from the 52-room, hilltop resort could not immediately be reached for comment.
