Castle Burke Homeowners Must Relocate Meters

Jan 24, 2006 – The V.I. Water and Power Authority has been understanding for years concerning home owners in the Castle Burke development, but the fingers on the disconnect switch are getting itchy.
According to Cassandra Dunn, spokesperson for WAPA, the Authority had been explicit in advice to home owners at the development which began as emergency shelter after Hurricane Marilyn about where meters needed to be placed as it developed into permanent housing.
WAPA asks that meters be placed in the front of property so meter readers are not forced to deal with dogs and locked gates when trying to read the meters. Dunn also said that meters in the back of properties also cause "an irregular distribution path" for the electric line.
On Tuesday WAPA, in a press released, warned Castle Burke II home owners who have not complied with relocating their electric meter that service will be disconnected on Monday, without further notice.
The release stated the Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation issued the final notice two years ago on Jan. 16, 2004. The Authority has subsequently issued several notices to affected homeowners urging their compliance.
Dunn said about 30 homes were presently out of compliance.
The release said WAPA is seeking relocation of these meters "in order to install a more efficient system which will minimize service interruptions, meet safety standards, and improve meter accessibility for reading and maintenance by WAPA personnel."
Homeowners out of compliance were asked to make arrangements with a licensed electrician to relocate their service. Coordination with the Line Department for an appropriate location and a final electrical inspection from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources will also be required to avoid disconnection. The Authority will waive the relocation fee of $100.
