Writer to Read From Work at UVI
Jan. 25, 2006 — Robin Sterns will be reading short stories Friday afternoon at the University of Virgin Islands in the St. Croix auditorium, Room 401. A wine and cheese reception will follow.
This January faculty colloquium will begin at 4 p.m. Sterns will be reading from her book of short fiction, Backless. An excerpt from a review by Marvin Williams is given below:
"Robin Sterns' Backless, her first collection of stories, unveils a talented writer adept at revealing with honesty and accuracy diverse landscapes and peoples she has encountered or imagined. The stories snap with a pace and rhythm that pull the reader hungrily along to their conclusion; and their narrative range, which includes interior monologue and free indirect discourse, impresses. Taken together, the stories, although engaging serious questions of personal autonomy and integrity, display humor–sometimes uproarious–, great wit, and irony which give credit to the characters' intelligence, complexity, and humanity and Sterns' brilliance. The stories are set in the Caribbean island of St. Croix and in various locales in the United States."
Discussion will follow in the Faculty Lounge, EC407.
