Two-Day Seminar on ABCs of Mad Cow Disease Begins Today
A two-day seminar on the ABCs of Preventing Mad Cow Disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy BSE) from entering the U.S. meat supply will begin at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 26) at the Research and Extension Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. The session is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. All livestock farmers, as well as the general public, are invited to attend. Topics to be covered include a BSE overview, information on non-ambulatory disabled cattle, air-injection stunning, BSE surveillance, specified risk materials and advanced meat recovery. The seminar continues on Friday, Jan. 27. Both sessions will take place in room 133 of the Research and Extension Center. To register, call Kofi Boateng at 692-4069 or Sue Lakos at 692-4179.
Paiewonsky Library to be Closed Jan. 28-29 for Electrical Work
The Paiewonsky Library on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be closed on Saturday, Jan. 28 and Sunday, Jan. 29, to allow for work on the building's electrical system. The library will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30. The electrical work will also interrupt air conditioning and networking capabilities in the four upper campus academic buildings. Those buildings, however, will have electrical service.
UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientist Program Offers Tuition/Stipend Assistance
Tuition assistance and stipend payments for research training worth up to $8,000 per academic year are being offered to current and incoming freshman students interested in studying science, technology, engineering, mathematics or psychology at the University of the Virgin Islands. The financial assistance and research training stipends are offered by UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientist – ECS program. (The ECS program is funded by tje National Institutes of Health MARC Program, the National Science Foundation's HBCU-UP and CSEMS programs, the Division of Science and Mathematics and other funding agencies.) It can apply to a wide variety of on- and off-campus academic programs. UVI's MARC Program Director Dr. Teresa Turner urges students to take advantage of this opportunity. She notes that UVI has had a tremendous record of success with programs under the ECS umbrella. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2006. UVI's EPSCoR Offices Relocated to Former Faculty East Building
Offices for UVI's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) have been relocated from the Sports and Fitness Center to the former Faculty East building on the St. Thomas campus. EPSCoR's new office phone numbers are 693-1428 and 693-1215. Program Coordinator Dr. Meri Whitaker's extension remains 693-1478.
UVI St. Thomas Class of 2006 Meeting Scheduled Saturday, Jan. 28
A meeting for UVI's St. Thomas campus class of 2006 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. It will be held in Chase Auditorium (B-110).
SBDC Sets St. John Seminar on Securing Federal Contracts on Feb. 1
A seminar on securing contracts with the federal government is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Legislature Conference Room in Cruz Bay, St. John. The conference is sponsored by the UVI Small Business Development Center and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Presenter Carl Christensen, project officer with the U.S. Small Business Administration, will outline procedures required for businesses to secure contracts to supply products or services to the federal government. The seminar title is: SBAs 8(a) Business Development and Procurement Program Orientations and Procedures to Secure Federal Government Contracts. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required. Governor's Occupational Safety and Health Conference Set Feb. 7-9
The first annual Governors Occupational Safety and Health Conference has been scheduled on St. Thomas on Feb. 7-9 at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort. The conference, sponsored by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center (CELL), is free and open to the public and private sectors. It is designed for individuals interested in making the workplace safer for employees and customers. Daily sessions are planned from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Specific training is planned in these subject areas: confined spaces, electrical safety, fire safety, health care and indoor air quality. Space is limited. Interested persons should call CELL at 693-1100 to pre-register.
St. Thomas Campus Intramural Coed Volleyball Starts Today (Jan. 26)
Intramural Coed Volleyball League play begins today (Thursday, Jan. 26) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The first match will be played at 6:30 p.m., with "The Fes" taking on a "Staff" squad in the Sports and Fitness Center. Intramural coordinator Erik Heikkila says there is still time for any students, faculty or staff to join in the fun. Teams should be organized as soon as possible. Each team must have a minimum of three female players. Individuals wishing to join a team are advised to show up the today's opening action or to contact Heikkila in Sports and Fitness room 227 or to call 693-1213.
Basketball, Table Tennis to Kick-Off St.Croix Campus Intramurals
A mandatory meeting for all captain's of teams planning to participate in the Spring 2006 Intramural Men's and Women's Basketball League on UVI's St. Croix campus is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, on the basketball court. Player eligibility, waivers, team rosters, rules and a tentative schedule will be discussed. A men's and women's Intramural Table Tennis Tournament is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, in the Cafetorium. Play will consist of double-elimination singles in both men's and women's flights.
