Public Works Proposes Allocations of Transportation Grant Funds

Feb. 2, 2006 – The Public Works Department has funds from two federal grants coming to the territory, and it wants the public to comment on how they're spent.
Public Works will get $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration to buy new Vitran buses.
Additionally, the territory will receive $1.08 million under the federal SAFETEA-LU Act to be split among several programs.
Of that figure, $811,984 goes for operating expenses. The Virgin Islands now qualifies as an urbanized area and will get about double what it got last year for operating expenses, according to Constance Gumbs, Public Works senior planner.
Another $83,472 is earmarked to help low-income residents get to and from their jobs or educational opportunities. "More than likely, we'll purchase bus passes," Gumbs said.
A total of $157,167 will go to buy handicapped-accessible vehicles. And another $34,106 is targeted toward transporting those who qualify as elderly, low-income or disabled.
To comment on the funding, call Deputy Transportation Commissioner Karole Ovesen-McGregor at 773-1290 ext. 2278, Gumbs at 776-4844 ext. 257 or Public Works Commissioner George Phillips at 774-1301.
