UVI Physical Plant and Security Employees to Be Recognized on Feb. 8
The entire University community has been invited to a Recognition Day Ceremony in honor of UVI's Physical Plant and Security employees. The ceremony has been scheduled for 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. It will be videoconferenced between Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus and Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus. Invitations were issued by UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster and by Campus Executive Administrators John D'Orazio and Dr. Monique Guillory.
UVI Sets Financial Aid Awareness Week for Feb. 7-9 on St. Croix Campus
Financial Aid Awareness Week activities are scheduled on UVI's St. Croix campus this week. General information tables will be available to UVI students on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Student Activities Center Terrace and from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Library Terrace. The focus turns to junior and senior high school students on Wednesday, Feb. 8, with a free financial aid seminar from 6 to 8 p.m. at the UVI Student Center. Presenters will be UVI Director of Financial Aid Mavis Gilchrist, and St. Croix Financial Aid Specialists Cheryl Roberts and Alicea Joseph. A Financial Aid Online Application Workshop for the 2006-2007 school year is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, in the Computer Lab, room 131 of the North West Wing building. Workshop space is limited. To register for the online workshop, individuals should call 692-4193. Workshop for Students Seeking Research Careers Scheduled on Feb. 8
UVI has scheduled a special workshop for juniors and seniors interested in research careers at noon, on Wednesday, Feb 8. Funded by the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program, the workshop is titled "Pathways Leading to a Research Career." Dean for Graduate Affairs at the University of Chicago Dr. Nancy Schwarts will be the presenter. The workshop will be videoconferenced between Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus and Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus. Dr. Schwartz runs a summer program for students, and a program for students who have graduated and are preparing to apply to graduate school. Financial support is available for both programs. St. Thomas/St. John Chapter UVI Alumni Association Sets Meeting for Feb. 9
A general meeting of the St. Thomas/St. John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. A social period will begin at 6 p.m. with the meeting starting at 6:45 p.m. A discussion of association events for the upcoming year is on the agenda. For more information call 714-2795.

Lady Bucs Win ODI Basketball Opener Downing UPR-Ponce, 54-40
UVI's Lady Bucs won their first ODI contest of 2006 on Friday, Feb. 3, easily defeating UPR-Ponce, 54-40, behind the leadership of senior Diana Palmer and freshman Angelina Prince. Prince scored a game-high 20 points and had seven rebounds and four blocks, while Palmer had 11 points, with seven assists and three steals. Palmer also controlled the game with her court leadership to give the revamped Lady Bucs a huge boost of confidence going into this week's schedule.
Bucs Men's Squad Drops Opener to UPR-Ponce, 68-46
UVI's men's basketball squad lost its season opener on Friday, Feb. 3, to UPR-Ponce, 68-46. Following a competitive first half, with the Bucs tailing by only six (28-22) at the break, Ponce went on a second-half shooting spree. Ponce hit 14 three-pointers early in the third quarter blow out the game. The Bucs' Devon Luis played a valiant game with 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Ryan Skinner was the Bucs top scorer with 23 points.
UVI's Bucs to Resume ODI Play in Puerto Rico on Feb. 10 and 11
ODI league action for both the men's and women's basketball teams resumes Friday, Feb. 10, when the Bucs return to Puerto Rico to face UPR-Carolina (at Maria Auxiladora School in Carolina). Friday's women's game is at 6 p.m., with the men playing at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Bucs take on the UPR-Aguadilla teams (with games at Politecnica in Santurce). Game times are 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
St. Croix Intramural Notes…
Bannis and Baptiste Run Away with Table Tennis Titles
Cyianne Bannis and Kornel Baptiste won the St.Croix Campus Intramural Table Tennis Singles Championships held Friday, Feb. 3, in the UVI cafetorium. Bannis defeated Denecia Hector (11-6, 11-9, 11-2), while Baptiste defeated Kirby McIntosh (11-6, 11-7, 11-5), to cap the women's and men's intramural singles titles. In the double-elimination format Hector defeated Brenda DeFoe (11-7, 11-6, 11-7), while McIntosh beat Angel Felix (11-1, 11-5, 11-2) in semi-final action.
Intramural Basketball Update
All team captains are reminded to present their team roster and player waivers in to Coach Bruce Wray by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7. League play is tentatively scheduled to begin next week. For more information or to register, contact Coach Wray at 692-4139.
