Feb. 9, 2006 – The sixth annual St. John Arts Festival kicks off Friday at the Battery with an opening reception by the Artists' Association of St. John.
The reception runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and will feature what the association members call "The Guy Show," celebrating "guy" things, such as sports, fishing, tools, vehicles, heavy machinery and "hot babes."
The show is on view from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday through Monday.
The weeklong festival continues through Feb. 17 with a variety of events for many segments of the community.
"It's a celebration of the artistic gifts of the people of St. John," organizer Frank Langley said.
The public is invited to meet St. John artists in several of Cruz Bay's galleries. Refreshments will be served.
From 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, meet artists at Galeria del Mar in Wharfside Village. Artists will also be at The Blue Palm in Mongoose Junction from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Meet artists from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Coconut Coast Studio in Frank Bay and from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 17 at Galeria del Mar.
The event also features an exhibit of Ghanaian textiles and works created by St. John children at the Battery. The opening reception is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The works will be on view Thursday and Feb. 17. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday kicks off with a choral recital called St. John Voices at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cruz Bay. It starts at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
Free concerts and events in Cruz Bay Park run throughout the week. The Love City Pan Dragons will play from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The youth jump-rope team, Love City Leapers, will perform from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The Soldier Crab Band will play island-style music from noon to 4 p.m. Monday. The Dengue Fever Band plays from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday. Koko and the Sunshine Band plays calypso from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Listen to tropical jazz from Sambacombo from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday. The park concerts wrap up with Ah We Band playing modern West Indian music from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 17.
Food and crafts will be for sale from Sunday through Feb. 17 in Cruz Bay Park. Hours are noon to 5 p.m.
On Tuesday, event goers are treated to programs by island children, a tango performance, and an exhibition by the St. John Quadrille Dancers. It will be held from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. at the St. John School of the Arts. Admission is free.
Many restaurants will also have music during the festival.
