Golden Key Honour Society Induction on St. Croix Set for Feb. 21
The St. Croix Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society will induct 24 new members at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Cafetorium on the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Croix campus. Chapter President Mashia Joseph said the society recognizes outstanding college juniors and seniors who achieve a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Five from UVI's St. Thomas Campus Named to Who's Who
Five students from the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Thomas campus will be featured in the 2006 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The students have been selected as national outstanding campus leaders based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. The students are Latoya Brathwaite, Khalila Frett, Mayleen Neaves, Toni Nisbett and Kimone Moving. They join an elite group from more than 2,000 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations. Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges was first published in 1934.
SBDC Schedules Business Tax Seminars for St. Thomas on Feb. 22
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC), in collaboration with the VI Bureau of Internal Revenue will offer a seminar titled "Filing Your 2005 Business Taxes" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The session will take place at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Topics to be covered include: tax changes for 2005, computing and filing taxes accurately, identifying local and federal tax requirements and how returns are selected for audit. Admission is free. V.I. Company and Business Professionals Sought for Career Expo
UVI's Counseling and Placement Center is seeking contacts with local companies and business professionals who might wish to participate in the annual Career Exposition and Professional Development Conference on the St. Thomas campus. This year's conference, which is slated for March 23, is designed to provide an opportunity for students to network with employers and to find out about full-time/part-time job opportunities and internships in the territory. UVI faculty and staff who know business persons who might be interested in participating are asked to contact Counseling Supervisor Verna Rivers at vrivers@uvi.edu. CELL Seeking Instructors for Variety of Courses
UVI's Community Engagement and Life Long Learning (CELL) Center is seeking instructors on St. Thomas and St. Croix to conduct short courses in the following areas: Introductory & Advanced Bookkeeping; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Review; Leadership & Supervisory Skills; Real Estate Sales Review; Project Management; Conversational Spanish; Massage Therapy; AutoCAD; Web Design; Business Writing; Computer Graphics; Certified Administrative Professional; Certified Nursing; and Assistant/Home Health Aide. Jost Van Dyke Spring Break Get-A-Way Scheduled for March 7
UVI's Student Activities Office will conduct a day-long Jost Van Dyke (BVI) Spring Break Get-A-Way trip on Tuesday, March 7. The trip is open to all UVI students, faculty and staff. UVI individuals may also bring guests. Costs are as follows: Students – $40; Faculty/Staff – $50; Guests – $60; Children under 12 – $25. Included in the cost are transportation between the St.Thomas campus and the Tortola Wharf (located next to the Seaplane terminal); round-trip boat transportation to Jost Van Dyke on M/V The Rocket; transportation on Jost Van Dyke to White Bay Beach; and use of non motorized water toys, kayaks, water trampoline, snorkeling equipment, etc.; and lunch. Also, for persons coming from St. Croix, one night of free, on-campus, double-occupancy accommodations (based on space availability) are offered. The trip is limited to 149 persons. The boat will leave the Tortola Wharf at 8:30 a.m. and return to St. Thomas by 5 p.m. U.S. citizens must carry a passport or birth certificate and photo ID for entry into the British Virgin Islands. Permanent residents must present a passport and green card. International students must carry a passport and an I-94 form. Afternoon on the Green Set for March 5; Cooks, Volunteers Needed
UVI's 17th Afternoon on the Green will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the St. Thomas campus. This year's theme is "Food, Fun, an Educational Mix – On the Green for 2006." Cooks, as well as general volunteers, are being sought. If you're interested in preparing a dish or you have a valid health permit and are interested in volunteering to serve food, please call the UVI Institutional Advancement Component at 693-1040.
Charter Day Committee Seeks Input for Event/Activity Calendar
The UVI Charter Day Committee is assembling the calendar of activities and events on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses during this year's Charter Day Week, which extends from March 12 through March 18. Divisions or units planning a University event during this period marking UVI's 44th anniversary are asked to forward pertinent information no later than Feb. 24 so the activity can be noted on the Charter Day Week calendar, which will be widely circulated. Contact Dr. Paul Abney (pabney@uvi.edu) for St. Croix events and Maxine Nunez (mnunez@uvi.edu) for St. Thomas events.
MBA Exam Scheduled March 17 at UVI; Registration Deadline Is March 10
UVI's Business Administration Division will offer the MBA Comprehensive Examination from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17. It will be offered in the Sports & Fitness Center Room 222, 2nd floor on the St. Thomas campus. The St. Croix campus location will be announced at a later date. The deadline to register for the exam is Friday, March 10. Applications and review guidelines can be obtained at the Business Administration Division Office. For more information, call 693-1300.
