Saxophonist Don Harrison to Perform with UVI Jazz Ensemble

March 18, 2006 – Alto Saxophonist Donald Harrison, best known for the ground-breaking records "Indian Blues" and "Nouveau Swing," will perform in concert and host a music clinic at the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus. Harrison will present a jazz clinic at noon on Thursday, March 23, in the UVI Music Building. The clinic is free and open to the public. He will also perform live in concert with the UVI Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, in the UVI Dining Pavilion. UVI vocal artists Detra Davis and Vashti Hooker will also perform.
The saxophonist, known as the master of many musical genres, plays everything from traditional New Orleans music, to swing, bop, post bop, modern, smooth and avant-garde. He has written and performed as a hip-hop MC, composed and played classical works with major orchestras, and is now the leader of three bands: "New Sounds of Mardi Gras," the pop group "Donald Harrison and the Electric Band" and the "Donald Harrison Quintet."
Tickets for the Jazz Ensemble concert are $5 for students and $10 for the general public. They are available at the UVI Bookstore, the Humanities Division Office, Jazz Ensemble members and at the door.
