Winners Announced in Territorywide Essay Contest

March 31, 2006 – After judging essays submitted from students, professionals in the work force, professors and others from all three islands, winners have been selected for the territorywide essay writing contest that asked entrants to respond to the essay topic: "Define the Term 'Virgin Islander' and What it Means to be a Virgin Islander."
Judges considered each essay entry based on the merits of creativity, substance, originality, grammar and presentation.
Winning entries include:
— First Place: Kyminis Elainea Vialet, (St. Croix) Ricardo Richards Elementary School
— Second Place: Rosetta Lawrence, (St. Croix)
— Third Place: Cheraine Christian, (St. Croix) St. Croix Central High School
— Honorable Mention: Jewelle C. Ible
— Honorable Mention: Shamari Skelton (St. Thomas) Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School
Winning essays will be read by the authors on the "Beyond Politics" radio program Saturday on AM 970, WSTX, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
"This essay contest has spurred a wonderful level of debate and participation throughout the territory, uniting us as a people to publicly debate who we are, what we stand for, and where we're going," Russell said.
"The entries were creative and original, thoughtful, and very well-done."
