The athletes were selected by the member clubs and their coaches based upon their performances in local competition, including the two CARIFTA trials held in St. Croix and St. Thomas on successive weekends, Poly Relays and The Carolina Classic in Puerto Rico, the Bob Hayes Invitational in Florida and college competition performances. Athletes who have experience in the CARIFTA Championships are Robles, a bronze medal winner in the 3000 in 2004; Tyfia Lee, who hopes to improve on her performance of 2004 in the 200 and 400; and Dascent and Walters, who were finalists in the 200 and 400, all move up to the under 20 age classification. The relay team will be the first entered in this competition in several years.
The team has the support of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee, which is preparing a national team for the upcoming CAC Games in Colombia and provides funding for the team. Track and field athletes for V.I.
continue to have success in CARIFTA, as was the case last year in Tobago when Sanny Eugene, JBTC and ECHS, won the gold medal in the 800 and received an athletic scholarship to the University of Louisville.
Coaches for the team for Guadeloupe are Devon Peters, head coach; Mario Toussaint, female coach; and Linda Garraway, team manager.
