Community Alert: Sewage Line Break at LBJ Pump Station

April 6, 2006 — The V.I. Waste Management Authority advises Christiansted residents of a sewage line break near the LBJ pump station and the WAPA desalination plant. This has resulted in sewage leaking into adjacent waters, which was discovered at approximately 12:30 p.m Thursday.
A mobile pump is being set up to bypass over Long Reef until repairs are made to the main line, which carries raw sewage from Christiansted town and surrounding areas to the Figtree pump station.
It is anticipated that repairs to the line will be completed within 72 hours.
The VIWMA advises all residents with impacted immune systems to avoid the area as the sewage may contain contaminants that will negatively impact one's health.
Signs will be posted on the beach reminding persons to avoid the Long Reef and adjacent beach areas until the problems are resolved.
For more information, contact VIWMA's Office of Compliance Programs at 773-1290, ext. 2228.
