April 7, 2006 – Sen. Craig Barshinger, on Thursday, asked Governor Charles W. Turnbull to extend the deadline by which the residents of Bournefield must move out of their homes.
In a letter addressed to both Turnbull and Darlin Brin, executive director of the V.I. Port Authority, the senator prompted them to extend the Bournefield residents time frame for moving out to eight months or a year. The residents were given four months, until August, to move out of their homes so the Addelita Cancryn School campus could be relocated to the area where they now reside.
Barshinger told the governor that the high cost of living, lack of available public housing units and affordable housing in the territory warrants an extension in the timeframe given to the residents.
"I know it is not your intention to cause any of the Bournefield residents to become homeless because of this recent decision," Barshinger said, in the letter. "Therefore, I trust that you will extend the deadline to these residents and provide them with the necessary assistance in finding a place to live. They deserve no less."
