Chequoyah George Named 2006 Carnival Princess

April 10, 2006 – The first event of the 2006 Carnival season welcomed hundreds of spectators to view the crowning of a perky 8-year-old from Joseph Sibily Elementary School. Contestant No. 1, Chequoyah A. George, captured multiple titles including most photogenic, best eveningwear and best intellect.
Contestant No. 2, BreAnna A. Elliott, was named first runner-up at the end of a four-hour pageant featuring four contestants, as well as named best talent.
Friends and fellow students from Sibily School rushed to the front of the stage to cheer the tiny winner, looking angelic in her white eveningwear, which was etched with blue trim, a red velvet robe and a glittering tiara.
The princess sat patiently on a peacock chair on the stage, through dozens of shots snapped by photographers. It was only when she stepped backstage at the end of the show that she let her joy shine through.
A large crowd of well-wishers gathered at the bottom of the backstage stairs at the Lionel Roberts Stadium. When she heard they were there to greet her, Chequoyah bounced up and down with sparkling eyes. Two friends came up to hug her.
When a photographer asked them to do it again for the camera, the princess gathered them close to her and smiled.
"I feel excited," she said.
Her mother, Carol Peters, said that went for her, too.
"I 'm extremely excited," Peters said. "This was a last minute thing. We decided to do this seven weeks ago. She did an extraordinary job."
The four contestants competed in the introduction, talent, and modeling sportswear and eveningwear.
Each contestant had her cheering squad with teachers, classmates, church groups and activity club members joining family and friends in voicing their support.
Contestant No. 3, Lisa-Marie Hodge, was named most cooperative.
Malikah E. Fredericks, a 9-year-old quadrille dancer and student from Lockhart Elementary, rounded out the field.
Francisque Roberts, head of the V.I. Carnival Prince and Princess Committee, said she thought it went well. "All the kids were wonderful," she said.
Organizers said there was not enough interest on the part of boys to feature contestants for the title of 2006 Carnival prince.
The new princess was crowned on stage by her predecessors, 2005
Princess DeJa'Nique Navarro and Prince Amari Raymo.
