Rutnik Scholarship Applications Accepted Till May 15

April 24, 2006 – The Ruby Rutnik Scholarship Fund is accepting applications until May 15 for 2006-07 scholarships.
The renewable annual $2,500 scholarship is offered to a qualifying St. John woman.
Another $2,500 scholarship is also available to a St. John woman or man who attends or plans to attend the University of the Virgin Islands.
"You don't have to be a freshman. You can be a sophomore or a junior," Janet Rutnik said of both scholarships.
Successful applicants will be announced by June 5.
The money for the scholarship is raised through the annual Ruby Rutnik Memorial Tournament, named in honor of Janet and Andy Rutnik's daughter, Ruby.
Ruby, a St. John resident, was a star softball pitcher at Antilles School. She died in 1996 at 21 in a Washington, D.C., car crash while attending American University.
Her father said that because her pitching style and accomplishments were legendary, a scholarship tournament is a fitting way to honor her memory.
The tournament is timed to coincide with Ruby's birthday.
The Ruby Rutnik fund also awards a scholarship fund to the winning team's school. Janet Rutnik said Tortola won the event in April.
"We've gone international," she said.
She said the Tortola team members are deciding how to award the scholarship.
Since all the young women on the team were juniors, Rutnik gave them the option of waiting until next year, when those same young women will be thinking about college, to award the scholarship.
Rutnik said those applying for the scholarships this year must have been residents of St. John for five years or more. They may also qualify if their families have lived on St. John for five years or more.
Students must be high school graduates in good standing. And they must be accepted at a college or university, or have good standing at the one they are attending. In the case of the UVI scholarship, students must meet requirements for that school.
Successful applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Financial need is the deciding factor when choosing between students of equal academic standing.
All applicants must submit an application form, a counselor's evaluation form, two letters of recommendation, a record of extra-curricular activities and employment, an essay on career goals, and an official high school transcript and SAT scores.
Students already attending college must provide their college and high school transcripts.
Applicants must supply identification in the form of a driver's license, passport or school identification, copies of college or university acceptance letters, and copies of parent or guardian 2005 tax returns.
Applications may be picked up at Connections in Cruz Bay or Coral Bay or by calling the Rutniks at 693-8069.
