June 2, 2006 – The University of the Virgin Islands awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to incoming and current students this school year, according to Patrice Johnson, director of public relations.
Johnson was unsure if the scholarship total was more or less than previous years.
Current students from the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses received $46,670 of the scholarships, with those awards going to 37 undergraduate and graduate students.
Another $103,650 was awarded to 28 students from public and private high schools in the territory who have been accepted to the university.
The awards ranged from a semester's tuition, or about $1,650, to a semester's tuition plus applicable fees and room and board, which is several thousand dollars more, said UVI Director of Public Relations Patrice Johnson.
Funding for the scholarships comes from gifts to UVI's Annual Fund and UVI's Scholarship Fund.
Tuition for students in the territory is $3,300 per year. Nonresidents pay $9,900 in tuition.
Room, board and fees are additional for both groups, Johnson said.
More scholarships will be awarded soon for this academic year, funded through the Tom Joyner Scholarship Fund.
Applications for scholarships for the 2007-08 school year will be accepted from Feb. 15 to March 15, 2007.
Scholarship Committee Chairwoman Ardrina Scott-Elliott said in a press release earlier this week, "We encourage all current and potential students to apply."
