V.I. National Youth Track and Field Team Selected

June 2, 2006 – The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced today that the largest team of youth athletes ever has been selected for the V.I. National Youth Track and Field Team, which will travel to Nevis this weekend and compete in the Leeward Islands Youth Track and Field Championships. The athletes under the age of 15, under 13 and under 11 will compete against athletes in their respective age groups. There are nine national teams which make up the Leeward Islands Athletics Association including: Anguilla, Antigua, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Montserrat, Nevis, St. Martin, St. Kitts and the U. S. Virgin Islands. Of the athletes competing for the V.I. this year, Vielka White is the only returning medal winner (bronze high jump) from last year. The athletes represent track and field clubs that are member organizations of the V.I. federation. They are students of V.I. public and private schools and are coached by their club coaches and/or school coaches.
Funding for the team travel is provided by a grant from the Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation and the Federation the V.I. Coaches are Dale Joseph, Hyacinth Joseph and Kenneth Christopher of the Cheetah's Track Club; Keith Smith and Mireille Sankatsing-Smith of the Burnley Dragons Track Club.
Team members include: Karen Dascent, Shanequa Brooks, Nakesha Culpeper, Amari Joseph, Alvon Lettsome Jr., Corrina Richards, Malique Smith, Treylon Wrensford, Shasel Alexander, Jahkoy Battista, Adia Benjamin, Angel Durante, Anisha Peterson, Rajiah Royer, Vielka White, Kahlid Williams, Jazmine Willock, Wyn Charlery, Deshawn Hewitt, Tamia Percell, Allison Peter and Andrea Wynter.
