Police Officer Charged with Aggravated Rape

June 8, 2006 – A V.I. Police Department officer was arrested Thursday on charges of aggravated rape and child abuse. According to police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah, the female victim was "under 15 years old."
Hannah said that, according to the victim's statement, Officer Allan Dawson, 47, picked her up at her home May 9 and took her to his home in Bordeaux, where he allegedly raped her.
Dawson, who has been with the force for five years and three months, is being held on St. Thomas in protective custody.
Hannah said bail for Dawson has been set at $60,000.
Hannah had few details about the relationship between Dawson and the victim. He said the investigation was ongoing, and further details would be provided as they became available. The names of rape victims and minors are never disclosed by police.
Hannah added that the incident was "alleged" at this point and said Dawson will be treated like any other citizen.
"The commissioner has stated before, 'any officer found in violation of the law will be dealt with accordingly.'"
Dawson, who was arrested at 1:07 p.m., has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
Hannah said he expected an advice of rights hearing to be held Friday.
