Documentary on VI Fisheries Airs Today on TV2
A half-hour documentary on the efforts of Virgin Islands fishermen, researchers from the University of the Virgin Islands and environmental groups to preserve and restore the region's fisheries will be broadcast on TV2 at 8:30 p.m. today (Thursday, June 8). "Seas of Change: Spawning Aggregations in the Virgin Islands" was produced by The Nature Conservancy, The Ocean Conservancy and UVI in association with Friday's Films. A discussion with "Talk 2" host Amos Carty will follow the airing at 9 p.m. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
FUVI Celebrity Golf Classic Set for June 8-11 on St. Croix
Virgin Islands golfers and youth from the territory interested in attending clinics offered by professional basketball, football and golf celebrities are invited to join the fun of the second annual Foundation for the University of the Virgin Islands (FUVI) Celebrity Golf Classic scheduled for June 8 through 11 on St. Croix. FUVI Classic events will take place at the Carambola Golf Course, the Buccaneer Hotel, UVI's St. Croix campus and the Divi Carina Bay Casino. A list of celebrities expected to participate is available on the FUVI web site.

UVI to Host HBCU Business School Dean's Summit June 11-13
UVI will host the fourth annual National HBCU Schools of Business Summit from June 11-13 at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef Resort. Business school deans from more than 40 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States are expected to participate. This year's theme is Managing the "B" School in a Global Virtual Environment. The summit is designed as a forum for addressing requirements, opportunities and challenges of growing business programs and initiatives. UVI will host an opening reception on Sunday, June 11, in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. More information on the summit is available from this web site.
V.I. Rum Industries' UVI Donation to Bring Total to $500K
The University of the Virgin Islands will receive a donation of $25,000 from V.I. Rum Industries Ltd., the makers of Cruzan Rum, on Monday, June 12, at an 11:30 a.m. presentation at the Cruzan Rum headquarters on St. Croix. Donald C. Nelthropp, president of V.I. Rum Industries Ltd., will present UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster with the donation to support scholarships at UVI. The donation will bring the total amount given by V.I. UVI Invites Public Input to Strategic Plan at Town Hall Meetings
The University of the Virgin Islands invites Virgin Islands residents to participate in a series of Town Hall meetings on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John in June. The meetings will give the Virgin Islands community an opportunity to obtain an update on progress made following public input last year, which helped to develop UVI's strategic plan, Vision 2012. Town Hall meetings are scheduled to take place on June12 at the Hibiscus Beach Hotel on St. Croix, on June 14 at the Palms Court Harbor View Hotel on St. Thomas, and on June 15 at the Battery on St. John. All meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. A news release is available on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
Workshops Aimed at Improving Access to Ocean Data
The recently organized Caribbean Regional Association (CaRA) for Integrated Ocean Observing Systems will host Virgin Islands workshops on June 12, 14 and 16 designed to open a dialogue among organizations and individuals with interests or ventures that can benefit from improved access to ocean data. CaRA is a partnership between the University of the Virgin Islands, the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagez and various regional stakeholders. SBDC Offers Seminar on Federal Contracting Opportunities
A seminar on the U.S. Small Business Administration's "HUBZones" program will be offered by the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, in the V.I. Legislative Conference Room on St. John. The program encourages economic development in historically underutilized business zones — called HUBZones — by providing federal contracting opportunities for qualified small businesses. The program will be presented by Carl Christensen, a Small Business Administration project officer. Pre-registration is required. Admission is free. For more information, call the SBDC at 776-3206.
