Dear Coach Paradise,
I have been asked to submit writing samples for a freelance writing job with a popular magazine. This is great news. Having my work in print will really me to establish myself as a published author. How come I find myself sitting here doing other things, asking people to do it for me and feeling a gnawing in my stomach? And more than how come, what can I do about it? Coach Paradise, help me please.
Signed: Stuck in Paradise
Dear Stuck in Paradise:
You are experiencing "trouble at the border." This lets me know that you are up to something really big. The border is that virtual mountain range between your vision or idea and making it real. Let's admit it. Most ideas never make it over the border! So here you are. You are embarking on a courageous venture. It is scary. At times like this the chatter of' ‘monkey mind' (those ever present background voices saying all sorts of discouraging things: "forget it, you can't do it, it doesn't matter anyway, who do you think you are?") grows particularly loud, deafening, urging you to turn back.
What I have to say to you is this. Ask if this chatter is really speaking the truth. If so, do something about it. If not (and I would guess not), tell monkey mind "thanks for sharing" and refocus on your vision and continue to take the steps that will makes your dreams come true.
I suggest that you create a vision statement, which would include being a successful writer, and post it somewhere you can see it on a regular basis. Make it clear, specific and so juicy that when you read it you get all excited about your life.
Then return to the task at hand. Ask for help if you need a jump-start, feedback or a hug. Do what works for you: create a schedule, commit to writing a page a day, go to your special, sacred writing space, whatever helps.
Coaching is always a great way to reconnect to your true intentions and stay on track. If your vision is delicious, I know that you will figure out a way to write great copy and celebrate seeing your name in print.
Warm wishes,
Coach Paradise
