June 22, 2006 – "Take the Test, Take Control" is the theme for a June 30 health fair to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Winston Wells Ballfield on St. John.
Sponsored by the HIV/AIDS organization HOPE (Helping Others in a Positive Environment), the event provides free HIV counseling and testing with same-day results, as well as blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes screenings, and consultations with health professionals.
"With health care, prevention is the key," HOPE Director Ivy Moses said, adding that it's important for everyone to know his or her HIV/AIDS status.
Drawings will be held for free round-trip barge tickets, commuter ferryboat passes, DVD players, phone cards, and more.
HOPE will also hold a bingo night June 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., to commemorate National HIV Testing Day.
The event will be held at Nazareth Lutheran Church, located on the street that runs into the ferry dock. The church is on the right. Moses said bingo cards cost $1 each, but all participants will receive a free HIV/AIDS bingo card that tests knowledge about the illness. The winner gets a DVD player. There will be prizes for the other games.
