V.I. Big Leaguers Advance to Semifinals

July 13, 2006 – In Guatemala City, Guatemala, at the Latin American region of the Big League World Series, Panama used four pitchers to hold down the Virgin Islands, 3-2, putting the Virgin Islands on the verge of elimination. But the V.I. team's prayers were answered when Nicaragua defeated Guatemala 3-1.
V.I. starting pitcher Kellen St. Luce allowed no earned runs, but the defense once again made matters worse by committing four costly errors.
The V.I. team scored first in the bottom half of the third inning. LeShawn Lettsome got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He then scored on a double by Kahmari Leonard in the left-center field gap.
Jose Bravo of Panama scored on a double by Eriberto Jimenez in the fourth inning.
Neither team scored in the sixth inning. However, Otto Castillo led off the top of the seventh inning with a walk, then stole second and advanced all the way home on a throwing error from the V.I. catcher, Causton Merchant.
The Virgin Islands rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dwayne Huntt led of the inning with a walk and quickly advanced to second on a passed ball by Panama catcher Ramon Castillo. Dufferin Culpepper got an RBI single into right field to drive home Huntt.
The Virgin Islands finished the round-robin part of tournament with a record of 2-2. The Virgin Islands advanced to the semi-finals to face El Salvador.
