Alert: DPNR Advises Community of Sewer Line Breaks

July 19, 2006 — The Division of Environmental Protection is monitoring two sewer line breaks: one at Campo Rico Pump Station in Frederiksted and the other at the Barren Spot Housing Development, according to a release from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources.
The break at Campo Rico is reportedly causing sewage to percolate to the surface and pool in front of a property adjacent to the station. The Waste Management Authority indicates that the line was ruptured by heavy equipment drilling in the area. WMA is currently in the process of evaluating both incidents and securing a contractor to repair the damaged sewer lines.
DPNR Commissioner Dean Plaskett is advising the public to avoid the areas around the affected Campo Rico and the Barren Spot sewer lines. DPNR is also advising that children and adults with compromised immune systems to avoid the above areas and impacted beaches. Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health. DPNR will continue to monitor the areas. For additional information regarding water quality, please call the Division of Environmental Protection at 773-1082.
