Brief: OSHA Reaching Out to Spanish-Speaking V.I. Residents

July 26, 2006 – A new Spanish-language Internet newsletter from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) now provides an added resource for Spanish-speaking V.I. residents.
"Capsulas de Salud y Seguridad" (Health and Safety Capsules) provides a variety of information on workplace safety and health issues affecting Hispanic workers.
"Our goal is to present important and useful safety and health information in a clear, readable and easily accessible format," OSHA Regional Administrator Patricia K. Clark said in a news release.
Topics in the inaugural issue include an overview of OSHA's role, responsibilities and services. Additionally, the newsletter provides information on health hazards posed by exposure to silica dust, a Spanish/English dictionary of OSHA terms, OSHA's Spanish language construction e-tools, OSHA's alliance program, public service announcements, and a list of outreach and training programs and activities available in the Virgin Islands.
The Internet newsletter is available at www.osha.gov/as/opa/spanish/index.html.
In addition to the Spanish-language OSHA newsletter, V.I. Labor Department Spokeswoman Janelle Gumbs said assistance in Spanish as well as French is available at the agency's offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
Gumbs said that on St. Croix, the OSHA office has Spanish-speaking staff.
