One Dead, Two Injured in Wednesday Evening Traffic Accident

July 27, 2006 – A 24-year-old man was killed Wednesday night in what police said was a head-on collision with another vehicle near Lorraine Village in Frederiksted.
Police Spokeswoman Shawna Richards identified the victim, who had just celebrated his birthday July 1, as Carlyle Bryan of Estate Upper Love.
She said that Bryan's F-250 Ford truck collided with a 1989 Honda Civic sedan that was being driven by 42-year-old Edwin Fergus of Grove Place.
Bryan's passenger, a 13-year-old minor and Fergus sustained injuries, but none were life threatening, Richards said.
According to police reports, Bryan was traveling north on Route 705, commonly referred to as Grove Place Road near Lorraine Village, and Fergus was traveling south when the accident occurred about 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Richards said that a preliminary investigation by the Traffic Bureau revealed that Bryan hit a pool of water and lost control of the vehicle, veering into the oncoming lane and colliding head on with the Civic.
Richards said that the Civic was "totaled" and Bryan's truck overturned after the impact and came to rest on its left side, where he was pinned. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Richards said that Fire, Police, St. Croix Rescue and Department of Health Emergency Medical Services responded to the accident.
She said that based on the preliminary report, road conditions were a factor in the accident.
Since Wednesday, the territory has experienced spurts of rain with the passing of a tropical wave. It is expected to bring more rainfall through tonight or early Friday and flash flood warnings could be issued if necessary, according to the National Weather Service in San Juan.
An investigation into the accident continues, but VIPD meanwhile are urging motorists to exercise caution on the territory's roads.
"Police are asking drivers to practice safe driving habit – wear seat belts, follow posted traffic signs and be aware of road conditions that may affect your ability to handle your vehicle," Richards said.
Wednesday's accident is the fourth fatality in just over two weeks.
Keithroy Southwell, 31, was killed in a one-car accident about 1:30 a.m. July 15 on Melvin Evans Highway after he apparently lost control of his blue 1997 Ford Explorer.
The investigation is ongoing and at the time of the accident, Police had not ruled out speed as a factor.
That accident came just four days after two teenagers were killed and two others seriously injured, also in a one-vehicle accident about 3 p.m. July 11 in the Mon Bijou area.
The two killed were the vehicle's driver, 19-year-old Delroy Prescott of Mon Bijou, and passenger Raheem Anderson, 18. Prescott was a drummer with the popular group, Stroka Band.
Avery Toby, 18, of Estate Strawberry and Carlos Nieves, 17, of Estate Profit were passengers in the rear of the vehicle. Nieves suffered minor injuries, while Toby suffered severe head trauma.
That investigation is also continuing.
