Poet, Playwright Ntozake Shange to Visit St. Croix

Aug. 1, 2006 – Ntozake Shange, who won an Obie Award in 1976 for the off-Broadway production of her play, "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf," will visit St. Croix in August to help From Page to Stage, a new theatrical company on the island, kick off its Main Stage Season. "for colored girls . . ." is the first play in From Page to Stage's season, and opens on Friday, Aug. 11, at Good Hope School's James C. Savage Theater.
"Our mission is to introduce and involve children of all ages in the experience of live theater, both as creative artists and as theatergoers. Her support of Playmakers, our program for teenage actors and playwrights, as well as Give a Kid a Habit, which provides discounted tickets to children who haven't been to the theater before, means a lot to us," said artistic director Jeanne Johnston.
Shange will attend the opening night performance and fifty theatergoers with special tickets can meet her after the play at a champagne reception held to benefit the Playmakers program. At 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 12, she will speak at the Florence Williams Public Library on "Monologues and Poetry: The Challenges for Playwrights and
Actors." This event is open to the general public, and she will give personal feedback to children on plays or poems they have written. On Sunday, Aug. 13, she will participate in a Question & Answer period with the audience immediately following the 4 p.m. matinee performance of "for colored girls . . ."The play combines dance, poetry, and prose to explore the experience of African-American women from childhood into adulthood in the twentieth century.
"for colored girls . . ." will be presented at 8 p.m., on Aug. 11, 12, 18, and 19 and at 4 p.m., on Aug. 13. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $8 for students, while tickets for the opening night performance as well as the Playwright's Champagne Reception cost $50. Only 50 tickets to the Reception will be sold. All tickets can be purchased in advance at The Buccaneer Golf Shop, Cache of the Day, The Brass Key Home Store, and Armstrong's Ice Cream.
