St. Croix Artist Ted Davis Opens at 'The Art Show'

Aug. 9, 2006 – "The Art Show" at Alexander's Bella Blu presents "Sea of Discovery: New Visions of Tropical Objects from Land and Sea," an exhibit of fine art photographs from St. Croix artist Ted Davis. The show opens with a meet-the-artist-reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Friday, Aug 11, at Alexander's Bella Blu in Frenchtown, according to curator Claire Ochoa.
The photographer, featured in the September 2006 issue of Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine, introduces his unique graphic approach to Caribbean imagery in a solo show in Frenchtown. Davis, born in Trinidad, presents his vibrant imagery reflecting his Caribbean heritage and love of the tropics. The subjects: palm fronds, local foliage, seashells, and familiar landmarks, are all carefully composed. "I work to create a compelling image as if I was directing a movie, creating an emotional response by manipulating light, color and composition," Davis said.
Before moving to St. Croix, he spent twenty years in Hollywood in front of and behind cameras working on television movies and sitcoms (Seinfeld, Doc Hollywood, Just Shoot Me, West Wing). His style reflects his knowledge and interest in taking the best features of a subject and emphasizing them. The process requires preplanning and, in his words, creates images that are "not journalistic or shot from the hip. I want to capture subjects not as they are, as much as how they ought to look."
All images are for sale. The pieces are individually printed by Davis using the very best materials made available to date in archival papers and archival inks, ensuring print permanence and quality. Responsibility for the fine art framing of the pieces falls to Sam Dike, Davis' partner, who excels at managing the details of the day-to-day business and makes sure the finished product is as perfect as possible.
The show is sponsored in part by Wente Wines. The exhibit will run through Sept. 12 and is open to the public. For more information, contact "The Art Show" coordinator, Gallery St. Thomas, at 777-6363 or toll free 877-797-6363. A show preview will be available on www.GalleryStThomas.com
