District Mathematics Teachers Will Attend Four-Day Institute

Aug. 11, 2006 – The annual Mathematics Institute will be held from Aug. 14 through Aug. 17, at the Palms Court Harborview Hotel. The four-day session will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. The institute works to advance the quality of education for public schools students, according to a press release from the superintendent of schools for St. Thomas-St. John district.
"Beginning Monday, Aug. 14, teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators will work on lesson planning, the use of technology, utilizing hands on materials and various instructional strategies that make mathematics alive and relevant for out students," said Ludence Romney, District Mathematics Coordinator. During the past year, the Virgin Islands adopted new, cutting edge instructional materials in mathematics. Teachers were involved in intense training throughout the year.
"Teachers will simultaneously work with consultants for their appropriate grade levels in three groups: kindergarten to fifth grade; sixth through eighth and ninth through 12th. Special sessions for principals and other school administrators will be held on Wednesday morning, however, participation in sessions with their respective teachers is also being encouraged." Participating teachers will be required to come to the sessions prepared with the following items:
· K – 5th grade: teacher's editions, reference manuals and calculators
· 6th – 8th grade: teacher's resource kits, calculators, and last year's lesson plans
· 9th – 12th grade: teacher's manuals for algebra, geometry and advanced algebra, graphing calculators, along with last year's lesson plans
Anyone who was newly hired or reassigned over the summer as an administrator, paraprofessional, or teacher of mathematics at any level is strongly urged to attend. Even though the registration deadline has passed we need everyone fully aware of how to effectively implement our mathematics instructional materials.
