'Bug' Collecting Celebrated at Birthday Party

Sept. 4, 2006 – Volkswagen "Bug" owners showed some labors of love at Magens Bay on Labor Day when Cleve "Grapo" Turnbull combined a 50th birthday celebration with a gathering of friends who share his classic "Bug" hobby.
Turnbull gave all the organizing credit to his wife. "She asked me what I wanted for my 50th, and I said a nice thing on the beach with my 'Bug' buddies would be great. She did all the hard work putting it together."
Five of the cars were from the 1950s, so Turnbull was not much older than the cars. Turnbull, however, did not have a new paint job or an upgraded motor.
The main party was in a Magens Beach shed, but back by the cars, congratulations to Turnbull alternated with talk of "dual port heads" and "twin webber two barrel carbs."
"We started in the seventies, driving and restoring the 'Bugs,' and it is great to see them still going," said Turnbull.
