CGL Will Conduct a Free Genealogy Workshop

Sept. 12, 2006 – The Caribbean Genealogy Library Inc. will offer a free Genealogy Workshop for Beginners from 9 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library Computer Lab on the St. Thomas campus of the University of the Virgin Islands. CGL President Susan Laura Lugo will conduct it.
The workshop is open to anyone interested in learning how to get started tracing and documenting family history. Participants need not be members of the Caribbean Genealogy Library in order to attend.
Some topics to be covered include: pedigree charts, descendant charts, research forms, census records, Internet resources and first steps to documentation. The session will also include a tour of the Paiewonsky Library's Caribbean Room and microfilm holdings.
Even though this is a workshop targeting beginners, Lugo hopes other experienced researchers will attend as well to share tips, tricks and experiences. "We learn best when we learn from others. We remember best when we learn with others," says Lugo.
CGL is a Virgin Islands nonprofit organization founded in 2000 by Elisabeth Swinson Sharp, her sister Grace Swinson Martin and Lugo. CGL's mission is to identify, preserve and provide access to Caribbean genealogy, history and cultural heritage information resources and to promote and encourage their use for family history documentation, education and scholarship.
CGL is funded through its membership fees and tax-exempt contributions made to the Caribbean Genealogy Library Fund of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. CGL's library is located at Al Cohen's Mall and is open to researchers whenever volunteer librarians are on duty. The library's holdings include extensive information on all 50 states and some foreign countries as well as the Caribbean.
For more information on the beginner's workshop or how to join the library, call Susan Lugo at 715-4421, or any CGL volunteer at 714-2136.
