September Is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Sept. 13, 2006 – The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute will hold a free information seminar on prostate cancer from noon to 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the CKCI auditorium. The staff of Schneider Regional Medical Center and the public are invited to attend.
CKCI is also providing free prostate cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 23. If you are a male over the age of 45 (or over 40 for men with family members diagnosed with prostate cancer), you can get a simple blood test that determines your PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen). If the PSA level is high, then you will be referred to a urologist for further investigation.
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 240,000 new cases of the cancer in the United States this year. The cancer rate is higher in African-American men.
For more information on the screenings, call 775-5433.
