WAPA Urges Permanent Power After Construction

Sept. 20, 2006 – The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority urges its customers who apply for temporary power during the construction phase of homes or businesses to file applications for permanent power as soon as the structure is completed and an occupancy permit has been received from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. Short-term temporary service is generally limited to 90 days from the date of connection.
For residential dwellings, temporary service for construction operations is provided at 240 volts. Billing is at the commercial rate, which is higher than the residential rate for permanent power at 110 volts. As a result, there are cost savings associated with permanent connection to residential power after the construction phase.
For businesses, once the construction phase is over, application for permanent power should be made and the load sheet submitted will determine electrical rates for monthly billing. In all cases a minimal application fee is required.
Residential customers can confirm their rate class by reviewing the information appearing in the upper right hand corner of the monthly billing statement. For more information, customers may contact the WAPA's customer services office on St. Croix at 773-2250, on St. John at 776-6446 or on St. Thomas at 774-3552.
