Sept. 25, 2006 — Three Superior Court Judges have been renominated to their posts, Gov. Charles Turnbull said.
Turnbull renominated Judges Patricia Steele, Audrey L. Thomas and Brenda J. Hollar, according to a Friday news release from the governor's office. Thomas and Steele also received appointments to the Superior Court's Family Division, with Thomas serving on St. Thomas and Steele on St. Croix.
Steele has served a dozen years as a family court judge. According to the Superior Court website, she was appointed to what was then called Territorial Court in 1994.
"Being a family judge requires a certain temperament, because the cases are often characterized by the emotions of the parties, Turnbull said. Judge Steele has demonstrated the knowledge, wisdom, understanding and patience necessary for this position.
Thomas has completed six years on the bench and recently began her second assignment in family court. She was appointed in 2000.
"As a relatively new judge, Judge Thomas maintained her caseload as well as taking on the responsibility of continuing the V.I. Moot Court competition, which is a forum where our youths can demonstrate their talent," Turnbull said.
Thomas taught continuing education classes and in the Upward Bound program at the University of the Virgin Islands, according to the news release. She has also participated in mentoring programs.
Hollar should be commended for her knowledge of the law and her impartial administration of justice, Turnbull said. She was appointed in 1994.
The Legislature makes the final decision in approving judicial nominations.
