Sept. 27, 2006 — Bermuda midfielder Kivame Steeds wasted no time deflating the hopes of the U.S.V.I. soccer team, scoring a header in the first 30 seconds as Bermuda thrashed the U.S. Virgin Islands 6-0 Wednesday to open its CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying bid, the Digicell Caribbean Cup.
Steeds scored another header in the 36th minute, and fellow midfielder Domico Coddington booted two goals in the 31st and 54th minutes for Bermuda, who dominated the home team, winning almost every throw-in.
The V.I. squad attempted several short rallies but fell further behind as Joshua Monty scored in the 54th minute; and then Keithroy Cornelius added the final insult in the 90th minute.
The small but vocal crowd at Lionel Roberts Stadium on St. Thomas filed out quietly.
The U.S.V.I. team plays the Dominican Republic on Friday, and Bermuda plays the Dominican Republic on Sunday to complete their round-robin group. The top two teams advance to the second round. The British Virgin Islands dropped out of play days before the tournament was to start.
