UVI Retiree Mary M. Savage Remembered
The University of the Virgin Islands is mourning the death of former St. Croix Campus Director Dr. Mary Savage. Dr. Savage retired in 1996 after 22 years of employment at UVI.
"Her strengths as a supportive and facilitating administrator promoted harmonious working relationships on the St. Croix campus," UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster said. "In our hearts and memories she will remain a valued member of our UVI family, as dear to us as the University was to her." A news release is available on the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu.
Town Meeting on Voting Process Set for Oct. 4 on UVI's St. Croix Campus
A town meeting on the voting process is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. The session is open to the general public as well as the UVI community. It will include an informational session on the voting process, voter registration and a demonstration of the voting machine. A panel discussion outlining election issues and candidate pre-requisites is also planned. This meeting will be followed by a forum for St. Croix senatorial and gubernatorial candidates at noon on Oct. 11, also at UVI. For details, call 692-4188.
UVI Institute to Examine Health Care Gaps in the U.S.V.I. on Oct. 5 & 6
The Nursing Division of the University of the Virgin Islands will examine the role the Virgin Islands' diverse culture plays in health disparities at an institute titled "Cultural Diversity and Health Disparities in the U.S. Virgin Islands: Challenges for the Health Care System." The two-day institute will be held on Oct. 5 and 6 at the Palms Court Harborview Hotel on St. Thomas. UVI Nursing Division Chairwoman Dr. Gloria Callwood said the institute will focus on "the health system and how that has impacted the people of the Virgin Islands." Constitution 2008 Talk Show Featured Tuesdays on WTJX – Public Television
A weekly television program focusing on the Constitution 2008 effort to adopt a constitution for the United States Virgin Islands is featured on Tuesdays on WTJX, Virgin Islands Public Television. The program, which airs from 7 to 7:30 p.m., is hosted by Attorney Tregenza A. Roach, who coordinates the public education program on the Constitutional Convention for the University of the Virgin Islands. With guest interviews and a call-in segment, the program is designed to provide a regular and reliable venue for disseminating information regarding the upcoming delegate election and convention. A Constitution 2008 Web site http://www.itsourfuture.vi/ – featuring extensive background information, public event schedules and an interactive forum is also available.
Bowling Green State Recruiter to Visit St. Thomas Campus on Oct. 12
Individuals interested in pursuing a Masters degree in Accounting at Bowling Green State University in Ohio will have the chance to speak with a recruiter on Thursday, Oct. 12, on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Dr. Alan Lord, a Bowling Green State professor, will conduct an introductory session from noon to 1 p.m. in T-101. Follow-up interviews will be conducted in B-212. Lord will have the authority to offer scholarships and grants to selected persons who hold, or who are within one year of earning, a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Successful candidates must have a 3.0 GPA and must submit a resume and an official transcript to Jacinthe Proctor in UVI Business Administration Division no later than Tuesday, Oct. 10. Science and Mathematics Announces Fall Symposium Winners
Three UVI students, Gaetan Gentius, Fitzherbert Harry and Alexia Mintos, have been selected as the presentors of the top three posters in UVI's Fall 2006 Undergraduate Research Symposium. The symposium, held on Sept. 24, showcased the research projects conducted by some 20 UVI scholars. A news release can be accessed on the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu.
Reichhold to Open Family Series with Russian-American Kids Circus
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will open its new Family Series of programs with a performance by the Russian American Kids Circus at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. "The Russian-American Kids Circus … is an opportunity for parents and children to see a top-rated performance together," said Pamela Sanes, co-interim director of the Reichhold.
