V.I.-Puerto Rico Friendship Week Draws Crowds to Fairgrounds

Oct. 7, 2006 — "Rich Cultures Working Together for a Better Tomorrow" is the theme of this year's V.I.-Puerto Rico Friendship Week, and hundreds are expected to visit the Friendship Village that opened Friday at the Agricultural Fairgrounds.
A steady stream of people poured into the village site at Estate Lover Love to witness the opening ceremonies. They came to listen to the music, eat traditional Crucian and Puerto Rican food, mingle with friends and relatives and celebrate the ties that bind the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Each year several people of Hispanic and Virgin Islands heritage are honored by the committee for their contributions to the community. This year the village is named in honor of Basilio Felix, a Vieques, Puerto Rico, native who migrated to St. Croix when he was 16 to work in the cane fields.
Other honorees include Judge Maria Cabret, Dr. Vilma Col
