Oct. 10, 2006 – Robert Bumann, who dominated the 2006 domestic cycling season, will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands at the Caribbean Cycling Championships to be held on Tortola on Oct. 14-15. Bumann was named to the team after setting a new V.I. record on the 25-mile Airport Time Trial course. His time of 58:01 easily broke the former record held by Jamie Keys and included 30 wasted seconds, which were required to re-engage a fallen chain.
The VI Cycling Federation had had excellent results in the past at the cycling championships, which are scheduled to include riders from 20 island countries. Keyes had a fourth place finish in the 2004 CCC Individual Time Trial, and female riders have medaled. The expectations for Bumann are high, as he is an experienced rider with a number of big races under his belt.
The VICF is a non-profit organization that develops cycling in the V.I. and includes over 80 licensed riders of all skill and experience levels.
