No Suspects in Shooting of Anna's Retreat Man Monday Afternoon

Nov. 20, 2006 — Police on Monday arrived at a basketball court in Anna's Retreat to find an unidentified man lying dead, shortly after residents reported hearing shots fired.
The victim, later identified as 38-year-old Cleve Hendrickson of Anna's Retreat, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Shawna Richards, a police spokeswoman.
Investigators have "no motive, no suspects," and ask anyone with information to contact police, she said.
Someone called 911 reporting gunshots at 3:55 p.m. Monday, Richards said. Hendrickson had no vital signs when officers found him, she said. His body was later transported to the Schneider Hospital.
This is the 20th killing on St. Thomas this year and the second in the territory since this weekend. The last killing occurred in the early-morning hours Saturday on St. Croix when Hector Velasquez, 28, was shot and killed at a Sunny Isle gas station while talking on his cell phone. Police have no motive or suspects in that killing, the first this month for St. Croix.
But witnesses reported seeing a car speeding from the area shortly after shots were fired at 12:37 a.m. Saturday. Velasquez was rushed to nearby Luis Hospital, but pronounced dead at 1:14 a.m.
Monday afternoon's killing is the first on St. Thomas this month, and follows a spate of killings last month on the island. The last homicide occurred Oct. 2 when Rory Bruce Turner, 50, was shot several times in an alley near Red Ball Grocery, victim of a robbery gone awry. Police have not solved his murder.
Earlier that morning, Shakif Alexander, 19, was killed in the area of the On the Run gas station near the Four Winds Police substation following an argument. Later that evening on St. Croix, Jermaine Phillip was found dead near the Ludvig Harrigan Court housing community.
Police continue to appeal to witnesses or those in the community who may have information on the two killings this month and other murders as yet unsolved. Callers can remain anonymous.
